We made it through 2nd year...

AND we're still married!!!  In case you didn't realize it, that is a huge accomplishment!
Here's a recap of our year:

 Tyler
  • Worked at UCI Medical Center and rotated through spine, trauma, hand/upper extremity and elective service.
  • Averaged between 90-100 hours/week for THE WHOLE YEAR.  Yes it's true and no, I'm not exaggerating.
  • Worked  2 weekends every month
  • Was on call about 2-3 times a week, which means staying at the hospital and "sleeping" there aka working in the ED.  This often translated into working ~36 hours straight with only a few hours of sleep
  • Typical day: Arrive at 5:30am, round on 6-7 patients, write all their orders, operate, see consults in ED, occasional extra meetings and conferences, get home on average 8 pm, in bed by 8:30 or 9pm.
  • Learned how to eat 8 pack of sushi or pizza in 2 minutes
  • Got addicted to Coke
  • Tried not to chew out nurses for paging him at 3 am for orders for lip balm
  • Longest operation: Spinal Tumor case- 12 hours
  • Nastiest operations: Hand traumas and bone tumor necrosing (Warning: graphic images...)

Rebe
  • Took care of Bridgette and Penny all day, put to bed most nights by myself
  • Grieved and continued to work through Amelia's loss without a husband to help and comfort me (not by his choice!)
  • Went through a stressful, time consuming and emotionally draining pregnancy.  Again, without as much husband support as we both would have liked.   He accompanied me to 1 doctor's appointment- the day of being induced
  • Had Penelope
  • Took care of Penny by myself, especially during the nights when sleep deprived husbands need more sleep than sleep deprived moms because Tyler cuts people open
  • Got used to sleeping by myself and now sleep better without Tyler here (sad, hopefully that changes soon!)
  • Traveled to visit my family in Layton twice- August and March
Bridgette
  •  Learned phrases like "Daddy's stuck at work", "Maybe Daddy home soon.", "Dadda's sleeping" and my favorite- "Bridgette's a queen, Penny's a queen, Mama's a queen, Daddy's at work."
  • But also the cute "DADDA'S HOME!!!!"
Penny
  • Took a few months to allow Tyler to comfort her and rock her since she didn't know him well
To celebrate the end of the worst year of residency, we went to the beach on Saturday.  Tyler did some surfing and then decided to give Bridgette a go at it.
Tyler thought it was more fun than she did...
 Happy now on the sand.
Penny was there too, but stayed in her jammies the whole time.
Bridgette was in heaven chowing down chips as fast as she could.  (You can tell she doesn't get chips at home!)
After some naps, we went to a yummy Mexican restaurant for dinner.

And got ice cream for dessert.
Hooray for being done with this year from hell.  On to third year, which will be 70-80 hour work weeks, which we both are excited for.  I never imagined the day when I'd be so excited for my husband to only work 80 hours/week!  Today Tyler got home at 5pm!  Wahoo!  Congrats to Tyler for working hard, not burning out and learning tons!  He has definitely earned his PGY-3 status!!

Congratulations! I have always felt sorry for residents (and their families). My mom's dad was a doctor and she told me once she, her mom, and siblings would visit him at the hospital every 2-3 weeks because he literally lived there! I don't know how you did it!

Oh man. Our ward here has a lot of family practice residents, and just talking to their wives about their schedules makes me tired.
They do have one cool thing-- the hospital cafeteria is free for resident families, so most of them go there for dinner every night so that the kids can see their dads for a little while.
Congrats my friend! Good luck with the next year!

Holy crap Rebe!! You both amaze me. Congratulations to Tyler (and you for not having a mental break down because I sure would have). Here's to working less hours in the years to come.
